insert ‘ball’ joke here

I spent a few hours last night on the Second Life Beta grid testing the new Havok4 Physics engine. Super fun! I meant to do some  sort of serious testing, but I ended up just rolling a bunch of balls down a big hill. :) The spheres especially are much improved and the performance of the physics engine is quite impressive. I hope that LL can get rid of the .01 meter gap that is still present on most of the prims, it really does add to the realism.

Right on!

Thank you for this highly enjoyable demonstration of the new physics! I giggled as all the planets rolled into the river …

Soooo fun! Yes, this will definitely change things in SL dramatically. I wonder if one day all buildings in SL will be set to physical, so that you’ll be able to see who can build complex structures that will hold even under the effect of gravity!

Also, we could demolish buildings with bulldozers — woot :)

Now imagine what this will mean when the second stage of LL’s Havok integration is released… ie. physical objects with more than 31 prims!!

HI Enjah :) Glad you stopped by

Gwyneth: Yeah. The new physics seem much more realistic to me. Maybe it’s just that they update more smoothly, but it seems like more that that.

I remember hearing a few snippets about the possibilities of a new avatar system once Havok4 was in place too. Although, now I cannot find the reference. I think that the joints feature may be coming back again as well.

With sculpties, windlight, Havoke4 and then maybe the Mono scripting and Pupeteering, SL will be almost a whole new experience.

[…] Be nice to see what a difference it’ll make for vehicles of various kinds….. http://www.shiny-life.com/2007/09/29/fun-with-physics/ […]

Now isn’t that interesting.
I gave you a link from my blog and then came here to leave a comment, only to find I’d already left a comment.

And yes, I inserted my own ball joke.

HI Gaynor. Thanks for the link! :)

The ‘Trackback’ link from my blog software must have beaten you back here to the comments. I was just browsing your Second Life Conceptual site. Looks pretty cool. Your Little Box of Calm looks interesting, I’ll have to grab a copy next time I am in-world.

Awesome. Looks like a lot of fun…some very cool things can come of this. Hopefully not trouble.

It is alot of fun, Michael. :)

ACtually, there will be harder for Griefers to use the new Havok4 system to crash or cripple a sim. Even the things i showed in this video would bring the current system to a halt.

“Sidewinder Linden outlined the basic goals for the current Havok 4 beta. “First is to see how many crash modes are left in the current build. We have tried ‘a number of interesting toys’ and haven’t seen much that can crash the current sim, which is hopefully good news. frankly, i’d like to know if there are any ‘kill modes’ left for these sims … With that said, please do NOT go trouncing through the beta world and kill off all the sims if you find one, ok? that’s not too nice to everyone else :)”

Second Insider Article

I’ve spoken with a few folks on the Beta Grid, some mentioned that current orbitors and other griefing tools were not working.

I don’t get anything that any of you are saying….

Michelle: We are all talking about “Second Life” - a virtual 3D world that allows people to create their own stuff. You can download the program for free and try it out yourself if ya like.

I’m sure if you have never experienced Second Life than a lot of what we are talking about must sound pretty strange. :D
