How to Use Sculpted Prims in Second Life

I am planning a series of video tutorials showing how to use some of the free tools that are available to create Sculpted Prims in SL. Before I do that I thought it would be a good idea to show exactly how you configure and use sculpties in-world. I realized recently that many people are confused by the somewhat arcane process of using a 2D image file to represent the 3D sculted prims. It’s a bit difficult to grasp at first, but this video demonstration clearly demonstrates the procedure of applying a sculptmap image file to a sculpted prim in-world.

You can also download this video as a higher quality, iPod compatible file. (112 MB .m4v)

Great video, I get a lot of basic questions about how to use sculpties, and now I can redirect to this tutorial.

Little note though, for the best results; currently it`s best to resize your created sculptmap to 128*128 (nearest neabour) before uploading them, due to a bug in the current sl-clients 1.18.3 & 1.18.4. A bug that should-be/is fixed in a future release of the sl-client.

When I joined SL as a newbie in may this year, I learned a lot from the noob-be-gone video`s, and as creator of sculptypaint will be watching this space :)

Hello Cel, Thanks for you comments and info! Also – thanks for SCulpty Paint! It’s a great sort of ’swiss army knife’ of sculpted prim tools . :)

I plan on featuring SculptyPaint in my next video that overviews free sculpty software, and I hope to create a more in-depth tutorial for it as well…

Thanks very much for this tutorial Vlad. I am new to building, and I just picked up a box of free sculptmaps to play with – your tutorial saved me a bunch of tinkering to figure out how to use them!

Awesome! Thanks! Although I’ve been in game for awhile, I’ve only recently taken the time to play around with creating. It’s fun and the sculptie things were confusing for me, but thanks to you, I can play with that too!
Great Job!

Thanks for the video! I am a 3D Animator and Developer and have started playing around with sculpted prims. I have a 3D related website called http://www.pangea3d.com and we offer free 3D models and textures. I’d love to soon offer sculpted prims to our users. Come on over and check it out…the site is new but growing everyday!

Thanks, was good, it’s my first intro to them, very clear.

Thank you for the intro to sculpted prims. I had no idea what they were but had the impression I would need to know how to use them in order to build low prim objects and other complex items. At least I know what they are. It was very clear.
