I just saw this posting on the Pontiac/Motorati Site, they are packing up and leaving SL.

Why? Pontiac is one of the very few RL coorporations that came in and actually did something fun and interesting. They became a part of the community. They allowed residents to be a part of their efforts. Even in their farewell post they say “We feel strongly that Motorati Island has set the bar high for how any brand, of any size, should approach Second Life”. So why are they leaving?

Doesn’t make a bit of sense to me. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they are gonna launch their own self-branded virtual world or possibly partner with another virtual world company. Or I suppose some upper executive could have pulled the plug becasue there was no visible, monetary ROI.

I can understand why a company like American Apparel would leave SL. They came in and set up shop…then did nothing. No interaction, no real content, no participation. They might as well have been buying an ad in a magazine rather than setting up in a cutting edge virtual world. I guess this is just another sign that the mainstream still doesn’t get Second Life.

Whatever the reason, I will miss Motorati.

Great thought provoking post. The business and economics side of Second Life intrigues me.

It is not surprising to me that Pontiac is pulling out. It took mainstream companies YEARS to figure out how to market themselves using the internet. Remember the early days of billboard websites? /shudder Even worse, some companies STILL don’t understand how to market to an online world. Some of the earliest and best adopters of internet marketing didn’t make it. I suspect there is a similar learning curve going on with Second Life and mainstream commerical activities. At some point they will get it. In the meantime some new folks will come along with some great new ideas to show the way. Some will endure, many will not.

When only 30 avatars can gather in the same place for an event, it is hard to generate huge numbers.

Good points, Mike.

I see the same similarities between SL and the early Internet. So many new tools and it takes time to learn how to use this new medium. I think Pontiac was doing a great job exploring some of the possibilities at Motrati.

Kate: yeah, that is a problem. Especially for popular events or for someone hoping for some sort of Real World attendance numbers. We can get 60,000 on the grid but only 70-100 in one place - on a good day! :)

Well, United Spinal Cord Association has just taken over the motorati sim …motorability now..same kind of focus on motor sports, should be open to the public in a couple of weeks….and their are some new tools coming their is a proxy layer piece of software that can relay through ghosts….so several thousand people could occupy the same space…although i cant quite imagine….what the chat box would be like or listening to 3000 people on voice….
