Video tutorial about using video in SL

Using video in Second Life can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of it so I’ve put together this short lesson that covers the basics. I explain how video works in SL and also show you how to create a very simple video screen object that you can use to play videos on your own parcel of land. I also show you how you can grab free videos from the Internet Archive to use in SL without violation anyone’s copyright.

Check out part two of this tutorial where I show how to convert your own videos for use in SL.

A couple of quick notes:

If you are trying to watch a video and don’t see the little video controls at the bottom of your screen (next to the audio stop and play buttons) you can enable the video feature in your Preferences settings.

It’s also a good idea to upgrade to the latest version of the Quicktime software to avoid a nasty little bug that could allow hackers to access your SL account using a specially formatted video. This bug has been patched but you need to make sure you’re using the latest version of Quicktime. It’s free and only takes a few minutes to install.

Please leave suggestions or questions in the comments. My next tutorial will show you how you can encode your own videos for use in Second Life.

Thanks so much for this! The timing was perfect ;) Of course, I do need to show a video on group land, which you alluded was more complicated. Is there a good link to a how-to for that?

It’s not too hard to get video working on group land. basically the object/script that is controlling the video must be owned by the same group as the land. This means Deeding the object to the group, which sometimes has to be done by an officer of the group.

You can find the Deed to Group option while editing an object. If you can’t deed it yourself then you’ll ahve to give a copy to an officer and have them give it to the group. Sometimes a video screen that you buy will have a separate Group Land Remote that can be deeded to the group and will work with the video screen.

If you are not using a scripted object and are changing the media URL manually, then an officer of the Group should be able to change the media settings in about land. depends on the permissions set in the Group.

Great video! THanks so much! I couldn’t find anything else on the web to explain how to do this.

I am a teacher and want to put the videos I’ve made about art history in a building. But I am confused about just one thing — how do I show different videos on one parcel of land — can you only set one url for each parcel?

Probably a silly question!

Hi Beth,

Yes, you can only have 1 video showing at one time per parcel of land. Of course you could have a scripted video screen that allows the viewer to choose between several different videos, but they can only watch one at a time. Also, switching a parcels video stream will change the video being viewed for anyone who is already watching something.

If you need several different avs to be watching different videos simultaneously, you would need to divide your land into smaller parcels. But remember that you cannot see the video showing on another parcel from a neighboring parcel. The avatar must be located within a parcel to see the video associated with that parcel.

Playing video file on a prim - SLUniverse Forums wrote on September 10th, 2008 at 10:15 am

I can’t get any video links to work in the media url link! I’ve tried and tried but all I get is either a picture of the web page it’s located on or a blank screen! I even tried uploading a video to a web site I host so I could try a direct video link from my web site, and that won’t work no matter what I change the file extension to. Any suggestions?

I bought a youtube tv in SL, so I can watch youtube videos in SL. Comes in handy cause putting a link to a youtube video into the media link doesn’t work. The tv came with a script where I can make a list of as many youtube video links as I want, and people can select them from a menu, and to keep people from changing the channel on each other, hide the control tv, and have many copies of the media play image so everyone can see.

I really want to be able to use my media url feature though, so what file types work, and what am I doing wrong?

Great video…. It is clear and concise… It is just too bad that I do not own a land in SL. I am dying to try what you said out …

The internet archive is another great suggestion. It is like the cherry on top of the sundae.

Thanks.

That video was painfully slow. I suggest a quick summary in writing.
Thanks anyways.
