Some of my zBrush to Sculpty tutorials recommend a zBrush script called Material Baker. It was the best way I had found to capture the material and shading of a sculpted object. That script no longer works in ZB 3.5r3. Good thing to , ‘cuz it lead me to these two, much better, material baking methods.
I linked to the first vid just the other day, but I’ll mention it again. This demo shows how you can use Photoshop and Zapplink to ‘bake’ the shading of your object. Super slick and it also helped me understand just what Zapplink is doing.
The other vid was recommended by a Shiny Life reader (maybe Vivienne?). This method captures the material and shading details right from within zBrush by using a Displacement Map. Baking zBrush material to a texture map.

Hey there,
Was curious to see whether we needed an extension like we did on the previous version of zBrush to get shadows onto our models, and if not does both these tutorials provide ways to get shadows baked on?
I’m still newbish so I’m not sure if I should be doing something or not.
Cheers.
Um.. what exactly IS zApplink doing?
Erasmus: The layers that you get in Photoshop via zApplink correspond to the views you set up before sending to PS. Each camera view is split into two layers. One with the color information from the zBrush object, and the other with the shading info from the ZB lighting and material.
You can edit the color layer and then send back to ZB to see the results. In the video above he is adding the shading info to the color layer to ‘bake’ in the shadows.
I like the Displacement map method in the second video. It’s easy to control how much of the shadows and details are added to the base texture – and it’s quicker :)
Zapplink is awesome and I found a real time saver when combined with a photo shop action for processing the layers.
Im using 3.5, When Im baking out a shoe maybe 10 subtools, each one i projection master front and back flip then export. Will zbrush record actions like photoshop? I dont mind fixing any jaqggies on the texture in ps jsut the repetitive tasks fry my mind
I watched the videos first one still seemed to require doin the repetitive steps over and over
2nd video i admit was totally over my head and lost me completely
i love this 3d modeling i go from feeling like i know everything to feeling like i know nothing a 100 times a day
I hope there will be a a good tutorial on how to use the multimap plug to generate SL maps as well
