This video from Opensource Obscure (@oobscure) gets me pumped for upcoming features in SL – shadows and projected videos. All sorts of possibilities with these techniques….

Blast from the Past
Torley has mentioned several times that we will eventually be able to share our Windlight settings. This’ll really add some great options for builders who want to add a special ambience to their builds. Looks like Namssor Daguerre from Second Skin Labs got tired of waiting. :) He’s compiling some great Windlight settings and provding them in an easy to use installer (WIndows PCs). You can also send him your own favorite settings to be added to the collection.
BTW – Namssor also has a handy set of avatar mesh files for all of you zBrush adventurers.
I’ve filed my first JIRA bug report. It has to do with some problems with the Auto Align video texture feature in the new WIndlight enabled viewer (1.19.1). It’s not a horrible bug, but it is annoying and also effects the use of videos as sculptmaps – which is a pretty neat effect when it works. If you are interested in this sort of thing and have a few moments, please head over to the JIRA entry and have a look. I spent a number of hours tracking down this glitch and would love to see it fixed. Even just having my findings confirmed would be nice. :)
I was happy to see this bit of news this morning (via Massively): The Lindens are still working on Avatar Puppeteering. This will be a way to control and animate your Av in-world using a nifty simulated physics system . Sort of like having Poser or Qavimator available inside of second life. We’ll be able to make up our own poses and create gestural movements on the fly. Shiny.
Check out AvatarPuppeteering.com for more info and a few short videos.
insert ‘ball’ joke here
I spent a few hours last night on the Second Life Beta grid testing the new Havok4 Physics engine. Super fun! I meant to do some sort of serious testing, but I ended up just rolling a bunch of balls down a big hill. :) The spheres especially are much improved and the performance of the physics engine is quite impressive. I hope that LL can get rid of the .01 meter gap that is still present on most of the prims, it really does add to the realism.
